Top 10 Environmental / Health / Animal Documentaries

"Opening up instead of hiding aware from the cruelty and injustice in the world today"

I have 10 incredible documentaries that everyone needs to watch (in no particular order). Some are incredibly sad, yet eye opening and all are extremely educational.

These documentaries will change your life, and push you to help save the planet and it's animals and also push you to make healthier choices for your own body.

This rating system is completely my own. Note that I'm an emotional person (hey scorpio sun and cancer rising!!), so the tear jerking element may be over exaggerated!

We all need to think of the bigger picture on a daily basis.

We won't be able to turn back if we keep living mindlessly the way we already are.

I am still looking for an informative movie about the Palm Oil industry, if anyone knows of one, please mention it below in the comments.

1. Cowspiracy

- Environment / Animals / Health

- Educational - 10/10

- Life Changing - 10/10

- Tear Jerking - 5/10

- Watch on Netflix or here.

"Follow the shocking, yet humorous, journey of an aspiring environmentalist, as he daringly seeks to find the real solution to the most pressing environmental issues and true path to sustainability."

There has never been a better time to draw attention to the link between animal agriculture and ecological crises such as climate change, ocean dead zones, and water shortages.“Cowspiracy” manages to do exactly that while simultaneously calling out several environmental organizations for ignoring – or even obscuring – the truth about animal agriculture’s impact on the planet.

2. Before the Flood

- Environment / Animals / Health

- Educational - 10/10

- Life Changing - 10/10

- Tear Jerking - 5/10

- Watch here.

"Actor Leonardo DiCaprio meets with scientists, activists and world leaders to discuss the dangers of climate change and possible solutions."

By the makers of Cowpiracy but even more targeted to the environment, it's a fantastic watch and even though there's no animals mentioned, it did make me cry. Because it's disgusting what we are doing to this planet on a daily basis.

3. Earthlings

- Environment / Animals / Health

- Educational - 10/10

- Life Changing - 10/10

- Tear Jerking - 10/10

- Watch here.

"Filmmaker Shaun Monson exposes the suffering endured by animals at factory farms, research labs, puppy mills and more."

Because “Earthlings” is packed with graphic footage of violence against animals, many vegans refuse to watch it. At the same time, most will still consider it to be essential viewing for anyone who might use or consume animal products.

For curious meat-eaters who seek the truth about the industries they support, or vegans who wish to understand the full extent of humanity’s brutality toward non-human animals, “Earthlings” is required viewing. In this sense, it may be the number one must-watch vegan documentary.

4. What The Health

- Environment / Animals / Health

- Educational - 10/10

- Life Changing - 10/10

- Tear Jerking - 2/10

- Watch on Netflix or here.

"Filmmaker Kip Andersen uncovers the secret to preventing and even reversing chronic diseases, and he investigates why the nation's leading health organizations doesn't want people to know about it."

“What the Health”explores the many benefits of a vegan diet and exposes the reluctance of health and nutrition organizations to point out the negative health effects of consuming animal products.

5. Dominion

- Environment / Animals / Health

- Educational - 10/10

- Life Changing - 10/10

- Tear Jerking - 10/10

- Watch on here.

"Filmmakers use hidden cameras and aerial drones to investigate the dark side of animal agriculture."

Dominion is known as the 2018 Earthlings. It is quite graphic but very educational and extremely life changing.

6. Unity

- Environment / Animals / Health

- Educational - 10/10

- Life Changing - 10/10

- Tear Jerking - 10/10

- Watch on here.

"For all humanity's advances -- science, literature, medicine -- mankind just can't seem to get along, even after thousands of years."

7. Blackfish

- Environment / Animals / Health

- Educational - 10/10

- Life Changing - 10/10

- Tear Jerking - 10/10

- Watch on Netflix.

"The story of Tilikum, a captive killer whale that has taken the lives of several people, underscores problems within the sea-park industry, man's relationship to nature, and how little has been learned about these highly intelligent mammals."

Whales are my absolute favourite animal, after Dogs of course. But I feel such a strong connection to whales, so this documentry was super upsetting for me to watch. Tilly (Tilikum) subsequently died. His death was announced early January 2017, but who knows when he actually died! He was 35 and spent 33 of those years in captivity. Male Orcas in the wild tend to live for 60-70 years.

8. The Cove

- Environment / Animals / Health

- Educational - 10/10

- Life Changing - 10/10

- Tear Jerking - 10/10

- Watch here.

"In Taiji, Japan, local fishermen hide a gruesome secret: the capture and slaughter of dolphins. Activist Ric O'Barry, who trained dolphins for the "Flipper" TV series, joins forces with filmmaker Louis Psihoyos and the Ocean Preservation Society to expose the brutal practice, risking life and limb in the process."

9. Eating Animals

- Environment / Animals / Health

- Educational - 5/10

- Life Changing - 5/10

- Tear Jerking - 5/10

- Unfortunately I can't find it free online anymore

"How much do you know about the food that's on your plate? Based on the bestselling book by Jonathan Safran Foer and narrated by co-producer Natalie Portman, Eating Animals is an urgent, eye-opening look at the environmental, economic, and public health consequences of factory farming."

Based on a book by Jonathan Safron Foar, “Eating Animals” explores the evolution of animal agriculture into the industrial process it has become today, looking at the environmental, economical, and public health issues tied to factory farming.

I read the book 9 years ago and it made a huge impact, much more than the documentary.

10. Food Inc

- Environment / Animals / Health

- Educational - 7/10

- Life Changing - 7/10

- Tear Jerking - 5/10

- Watch on Netflix or YouTube.

"Documentary filmmaker Robert Kenner examines how mammoth corporations have taken over all aspects of the food chain in the United States, from the farms where our food is grown to the chain restaurants and supermarkets where it's sold."
