Why We Should Meditate

Updated: Apr 19

Meditation is a huge part of my life, and it has been for quite some time. I found meditation before I found yoga which I've heard is quite backwards! Having the ability to completely switch off during my yoga practice makes it so much more meaningful and I believe my meditation practice is the reason.

I always believed that meditation was for Buddhist monks and hippies only. If you had told me 5 years ago that I would meditate almost everyday I would have laughed as I thought it was boring and completely useless.

But I found meditation during a difficult and stressful time in my life and it completely changed me and my perspective on so many things in my life.

But why is meditation so important to so many people? And why should you meditate? Below are some of the biggest reasons why people meditate and I hope it helps you choose if meditation is for you.

1. Less Stress

One study suggests that meditation can cut back on anxiety by almost 40 percent , and it doesn’t take a lot of time to reap these benefits. Just 25 minutes of meditation (done three times per week) may make tasks feel less stressful, according to recent research .

2. Helps with Depression

Research suggests that 30 minutes of meditation improves depression symptoms (along with anxiety and pain). I usually meditate for 10-15 minutes a day, and I can say that it really helped with my own depression.

3. Better Relationships

Meditation will absolutely help you maintain healthy relationships. Not only does it let you be more present in relationships, but it also helps you approach tricky situations with a calm mind and body.

4. Helps with Temper

Feeling your blood boil regularly is undoubtedly bad for your health. So don’t get mad, get meditating!

5. Helps with Insomnia

One of the key reasons for insomnia is our thoughts running through our mind which can result in anxiety, stress and depression. Meditation clears out the clutter in your mind, which lets you slip easily into sleep. Meditating before you sleep removes the clutter and sets your mind for a more peaceful and deeper sleep.

6. Increase Your Self-Awareness

Meditation gives you clarity on your thoughts, your inner desires and increased self-awareness. The more you meditate, the more self-aware you become. You become more conscious of what you think, the way you think, what you feel and what you want.

7. Makes You Grounded and Calmer

During meditation, you stop becoming attached to the physical world and you start becoming a third party observer to your reality. You become an observer to the kind of thoughts and feelings that run through you.

8. Increase Your Fulfillment of Life

The different benefits of meditation combine to give you an increased fulfillment of life. You become more positive and rejuvenated. Meditation puts you in the position to get even more out of your day and everyday life.

I started meditating using Headspace, which I found great as it is a guided meditation app, and you get your first 10 days meditating free. There are also tonnes of videos on YouTube.

I hope this helps guys.
